I-90 / Nagel Road Interchange Project Timeline

December 11, 2012

I-90 / Nagel Road Interchange opening to traffic.

Please be advised that the I-90 / Nagel Road Interchange will be opening to traffic on December 20, 2012 at approximately 12 p.m. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on the newly constructed bridge at 10 a.m. Once the ribbon cutting is completed, crews will remove the barricades that are currently in place and allow traffic to use the bridge as well as the east and west bound exit and entrance ramps.

Motorists are STRONGLY urged to use caution while becoming familiar with the new lane assignments, signals and traffic patterns.

November 29, 2012

Chester Road / Nagel Road (north of Chester) & Just Imagine Drive Re-opening to traffic.

Please be advised that the following roads will re-open to traffic on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at approximately 9 a.m.

1.Chester Road from Lear Industrial Parkway to Nagel Road.

2.Just Imagine Drive from Nagel Road to the east project limits.

3.Nagel Road from Chester Road to the north project limits.

Once re-opened the temporary roadway currently in use will be closed to traffic. The traveling public is urged to travel these areas with caution as new traffic signals and patterns are in place. Nagel Road south of Chester will re-open in the very near future. Until then, motorists are cautioned to obey traffic signs and stay out of areas with “Road Closed” signs as work in these areas is still in progress.

October 30, 2012

With the re-opening of Avon & Nagel Road intersection, progress on the Interchange continues but has been slowed from time to time by the fall rains. At this time 90% of the project has been surface paved with only the area of Nagel Road north of Chester Road remaining. The contractor continues to install safety items such as guard rail and is also finishing striping as weather allows. The focus now is to re-open Chester, Nagel and Just Imagine Drive as soon as possible.

I-90 LANE RESTRICTION NOTIFCATION

Please be advised that in order to complete painting of the steel beams under the newly placed Nagel Road Interchange bridge over I-90, it will be necessary to restrict eastbound traffic to 2 lanes through the construction zone. This work will take place from October 2nd through October 4, 2012 and be done from 6 am to 4 pm. This means that morning commute traffic eastbound will be affected. If at all possible, motorists are urged to find alternate routes of travel to avoid potential congestion and delays on I-90.

AVON / NAGEL / CHESTER ROAD UPDATE

With approximately 75% of the project now under pavement a great deal of anticipation surrounds the opening of Avon, Nagel, and Chester Roads (including Just Imagine Drive). These areas have all been paved up to the intermediate course of asphalt and all that remains is the surface course and striping which is anticipated to be placed by the end of September. While plans originally called for the opening of these streets by the start of the school year in the intermediate course it was decided to finish the work up and to finish striping so as not to inconvenience the travelling public. Other factors that also came into play were delays due to inclement weather which took place at critical points of the project. Regardless, all involved have worked very hard to make sure that opening will be done as soon as possible. And while the delay may inconvenience some drivers, an opening of these roads in October of 2012 is still far better than June of 2013.

The City of Avon would like to remind drivers that a little patience, courtesy and obeying posted warning signs in construction zones could avoid a tradgedy.

August 7, 2012

A great deal of progress has been made on the project in the last month. The Chester / Nagel Road and Just Imagine Drive intersection are currently in the process of being paved and should be open to traffic by the end of September. In addition, all of the concrete work on the new bridge has been completed and it has been opened to construction vehicle traffic only. By allowing trucks to haul materials across the bridge, the contractor is able to move the project along at a faster pace.

The work on the on / off ramps as well as Avon and Nagel Roads is also moving forward. Curbs will be poured on Avon Road next week with pavement soon to follow. The goal is to have Avon Road and a portion of Nagel Road reopened by the time the school year starts.

Avon and Nagel Roads were only closed for a few hours before full-scale earthwork operations began to adjust the grade and widen both roads to accept future Interchange traffic. Avon Road is also being realigned at the intersection with Nagel to allow for traffic to enter and exit the highway more efficiently.

The bridge deck was successfuly poured and has been cured. The approach slabs are now in process of being completed.

Lime stabilization is being performed on Chester Road and Just Imagine Drive prior to placement of stone and pavement.

In order to expedite construction of the Nagel Road Interchange and the work associated with it, Mosser Construction will be closing the intersection of Avon and Nagel Road to through traffic on Monday, June 18, 2012 at approximately 9 a.m. The timing of the closure will allow for morning traffic to use Avon Road in a normal manner. Once the intersection is closed, traffic will be detoured to the east end of Avon Road at the intersection of Bradley Road in Westlake, OH. The closure will be in place until approximately September 1, 2012 and once construction is completed, Avon Road will once again be closed at the City of Avon border with Westlake.

June 6, 2012

The newly completed portion of Nagel Road as well as the temporary bypass road are fully operational. The feedback from local businesses and motorists has been very positive. Within hours of the new roadways being opened to traffic, the old section of Just Imagine Drive was being torn out. Mosser Construction is working on fill and storm water activities as well as preparing to pour the concrete deck on top of the new bridge.

The Nagel Road Interchange was recently inspected by the Army Corps Of Engineers and passed with flying colors. The Army Corps are responsible for keeping wetlands, streams and rivers free of contamination and pollution. The results of the inspection are a credit to Mosser and to ODOT for maintaining and environmentally friendly site.

May 23, 2012

On Tuesday May 29, 2012 Mosser Construction is scheduled to switch phases on the Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) for the Interchange Project. The switch should take place from approx. 9am and 12pm. The traffic pattern change will open the newly constructed portion of Nagel Rd. at the Cleveland Clinic Blvd., which is now closed. Also, it will incorporate the use of the temporary roadway that is installed between Nagel Rd. and Just Imagine Drive (see two attached maps for clarification).

East-bound travel on Chester Rd. will be closed from just east of Lear Industrial Parkway (open to Jenne Distributing), all the way to the project limits where the temporary roadway ends on Just Imagine Drive. Lear Industrial Parkway will be used for all travel going to Nagel Rd. north or south, or to Just Imagine Drive.

Again, we urge all traffic not working or doing business in the area to find alternate routes of travel.

April 11, 2012

In order to complete the next phase of construction for the Nagel Road / I-90 Interchange, ODOT will be closing Nagel Road approximately 500 feet north of Chester Road. The closure will take place on April 16th, 2012 and last for a period of approximately 2 months.

During this time all north and southbound traffic on Nagel Road will be detoured onto Lear Industrial Parkway. While the construction takes place, there will be no access to Cleveland Clinic Blvd. from Nagel Road. Patients visiting the Richard Jacobs Clinic facility may do so from Chester Road / Just Imagine Drive.

The City of Avon strongly urges all motorists that do not work or conduct business in this area to please find alternate routes of travel.

Avon - Detour April - May Rev1

April 10, 2012

The bridge abutments experienced a very small amount of settlement over the winter and as a result ODOT has allowed Mosser Construction to continue bridge construction ahead of schedule. Instead of having to wait until May, the contractor has been preparing for placing the steel beams which should take place this week (weather providing).

The mild winter helped construction in some aspects but was a hindrance in others. Instead of having hard frozen ground to work on the contractor was working in mud which slowed installation of the main storm sewer trunk lines. Even so most of the storm sewer mains along Nagel and Chester Roads have been installed due to a fairly dry spring.

January 20, 2012

Progress on the project remains steady despite the unusual Ohio winter. The north and south side abutments have been completed and are now in process of a 5 month settlement period. The center median piles have been driven and the concrete columns poured around them for support of the concrete cap which is currently in process. Additionally, storm sewer installation continues on both the north and south sides of the project. Most of the gas line relocation is completed with the remaining utility relocation being on schedule.

November 29, 2011

In order to complete the electrical line relocation for the Nagel Interchange project, First Energy will need to temporarily close both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-90 on Sunday December 4th, starting at 6 a.m. There will be a series of closures which will last for approximately 15 minutes each. Avon Police Department will block all lanes while the work is performed and then allow traffic to pass through until the next phase of work begins.

November 14, 2011

Demolition of the old Nagel Road bridge is complete. The steel beams being driven on the south side of I-90 are part of the support structure for the future bridge deck. The precast concrete panels make up the MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) wall that will be part of the bridge abutment. The intent of constructing the MSE wall at this time is to allow for a settlement period during the winter months.

In addition to the bridge construction work, tree clearing for the on / off ramps on the south side of I-90 and the realignment of Avon Road have been completed. This will allow the installation of storm drainage during the winter months.

October 26, 2011

Before construction of the new bridge and abutments can begin the old Nagel Road bridge must be removed. Removal of the concrete bridge deck has been completed and the process of removing the structural beams is underway. Removal of the beams will be done from south to north. As the removal process moves to the center median of I-90, drivers are urged to keep their focus on the road and the lane shift that is in place.

October 16, 2011

In order to continue completion of the high pressure gas main, Columbia Gas will need to cross over Chester Road. As a result, Chester Road will need to be closed just west of Nagel Road for 1 day on October 18th. Columbia Gas will have flaggers in place in order to route traffic around the affected work area.

October 6, 2011

With the Nagel Road bridge now closed, the work to start demolition has begun. The traffic cones on I-90 are in place in order to shift traffic so that abutments can be constructed for the new bridge.

City council recently passed a resolution to explore the option of opening Avon Road at the City of Westlake border in the spring of 2012. By doing this, Mosser Construction will be able to close the intersection of Avon and Nagel Roads in order to perform construction in one phase rather than three. This will shorten the duration of the work in that area and allow for safer working conditions for the contractors employees. Additionally, residential and construction traffic will not have to share the same roadway resulting in faster commutes. Before Avon Road can be re-opened all of the costs and time savings will have to be planned and analyzed. This includes repairs that will have to be made to the surface of Avon Road.

The water, sanitary, and gas line relocation work continues. As the gas line is completed in sections, Columbia Gas will be purging the lines. While residents and businesses in the area may smell natural gas as this work occurs, there is no danger as the amount of gas in the area is insignificant. Before the colder weather sets in the contractor performing the water and sanitary work will excavate the gravel from the road crossings and place asphalt in its place. This should resolve issues with the roadway deteriorating.

The City of Avon asks the traveling public to please reduce speeds and obey all posted detours and traffic signage in work zones.

September 28, 2011

The City of Avon has just been informed that Nagel Road will be closed Sept. 29 to Oct. 3.

Nagel Road in Avon will be closed Thursday to Monday between Lear Industrial Parkway and the intersection of Chester Road and Just Imagine Drive for the ETL tie-in. You can drive through Lear Industrial Park from Nagel to Chester and take Chester back to Nagel or use Jaycox Road as an alternate north/south route. Local traffic will be maintained.

Concerns relating to traffic and construction should be directed to Avon Lake Municipal Utilities at 933-6226 on workdays (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) or 933-3229 on weekends and holidays. ALMU Eastern Transmission Lines 1 & 2 provide water for the cities of Avon and North Ridgeville, the Rural Lorain County Water Authority, and the County and City of Medina.

Future updates on the road closure will be available on Twitter and www.avonlakewater.org

Detour through Lear Industrial Park from Nagel to Chester and take Chester back to Nagel or use Jaycox Road as an alternate north/south route.

We remind the public that on the morning of October 3, 2011 Nagel Road will be closed for a period of approximately 18 months between Chester Road and Avon Road. Please allow for extra travel time.

For real time traffic and detour information, go to: http://www.buckeyetraffic.org/and be sure to check back to this web page for updates as the project moves forward.

September 23, 2011

The weather has caused some challenges with the utility work currently in progress and has delayed the closing of the Nagel Road bridge to the morning of October 3rd, 2011. Once again, drivers are strongly urged to begin using alternate routes of travel so as to avoid traffic tie ups when the bridge closes.

September 14, 2011

Drivers passing through the area of Chester and Nagel Roads have no doubt noticed the construction that is taking place. The work being currently performed needs to be completed in advance of the I-90 / Nagel Road Interchange project in order to relocate utilities that conflict with the new bridge and roadway. While there are no road closures currently in place The City of Avon expects the contractor and ODOT will be closing the Nagel Road bridge over I-90 on September 28, 2011.

As with any ODOT project, detour routes will be well marked and access to all local homes and businesses will be maintained. Until the spring of 2012, there will not be any other road closures within the project limits.

In lieu of the coming detours it would be advisable for drivers that live and work in the area to begin using alternate routes of travel now. This will minimize the traffic delays currently being experienced and prevent delays once the Nagel Road bridge is closed.

For real time traffic and detour information, go to: http://www.buckeyetraffic.org/and be sure to check back to this web page for updates as the project moves forward.
