Bicycle Unit

The Avon Police Department Bicycle Unit was started in 2017. The Unit consists of one (1) Sergeant and four (4) Officers who are certified through the International Police Mountain Bike Association. Officers must attend a bicycle training course designed to train them on how to ride safely and comfortably in traffic, off-road, and under various conditions. Officers spend hours in skill development, riding in diverse traffic situations and practicing patrol tactics. They learn to ascend curbs and stairs, descend stairs, and perform emergency maneuvers designed to avoid crashes.

The Bicycle Unit targets street-level crimes including narcotics violations, liquor and curfew enforcement and patrols multiple areas including parks, commercial areas, neighborhoods, and other areas identified as having a recurring crime problem. The Bicycle Unit takes an active role in city-sponsored events, festivals, civic gatherings, public education opportunities and general public safety.
