LIFEGUARD

Red Cross Lifeguard certification required. Applications also accepted from those enrolling in a lifeguarding class. The job is to provide a safe, clean and customer friendly aquatic facility. Responsible for preventing and responding to emergencies, accident, and injuries. Understand and enforce facility rules, maintain skills through in-service training & certification renewal. Provide information and assistance to customers, perform cleaning and equipment set up/take down duties.

Minimum age 15. Starting Wage: $14.30

Lifeguard Classes available at local YMCA’s and Recreation Centers

The Pool Manager will interview prospective guards prior to obtaining certification. Final hiring is contingent on successful completion of a course.

LIFEGUARD COURSES & PREREQUISITES

The American Red Cross lifeguard training and certification are imperative to the process of getting hired on as an official Red Cross lifeguard. The detailed training includes both testing of hands-on skills as well as comprehension on written tests. The certification, which includes First Aid, CPR and AED training, is valid for two years upon completion and is accepted nationwide. The American Red Cross is the most respected source for training and certification of this kind.

Blended learning option may be available at some facilities.

Prerequisites for Lifeguard Training include:

  • Students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class
  • Students must pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to taking lifeguarding courses
  • 150 Yard swim (Breaststroke or Freestyle)
  • Swim 20 yards, service dive and recover 10 pound weight from 7 – 10 feet of water and return to start in under 1 minute and 40 seconds. Exit water without use of ladder
  • Tread water (legs only) for 2 minutes, swim additional 50 yards

NOTE:  Locations offering classes in February, March and/or April include French Creek YMCA (440-934-9622), Westshore YMCA, Lakewood Recreation, Westlake Recreation Center, Seven Hills Recreation, Rocky River Recreation Center, and Strongsville Recreation.

POOL TECHNICIAN/SLIDE ATTENDANT 

Keeps pool area, buildings and grounds clean; Performs custodial duties including cleaning restrooms, pool equipment, pool gutters, decks etc. Vacuums pool, removes litter and trash, assists in the set-up and clean-up of activities.

**May also monitor safe use of slides. Dispatches individuals, checks height restrictions, enforces rules.

Starting Wage: $12.65/hr. Minimum Age 15.

**Slide attendant must be a minimum age of 16.
